Paver Patio vs. Concrete: Which Is Better for Western NC?

This is one of the most common questions we get from homeowners in Morganton, Hickory, and across Western NC. Concrete is the cheaper option upfront — but pavers tell a different story over 10, 20, and 30 years. Here's an honest breakdown of both so you can make the right call for your property and budget.

Upfront Cost: Concrete Wins

There's no getting around it — poured concrete is less expensive to install than pavers. In Western NC, expect to pay:

On a 400 sq ft patio, that's roughly $3,200–$6,000 for concrete vs. $6,000–$12,000 for pavers. If upfront cost is the only factor, concrete wins. But that's rarely the whole story.

Durability in Western NC's Climate

Here's where pavers pull ahead significantly. Western NC sits in USDA zones 6b–7a, which means freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Water gets into concrete, freezes, expands, and cracks the slab. It's not a matter of if — it's when.

Pavers handle freeze-thaw differently. Because each paver is an individual unit set on a compacted gravel base, they flex and move slightly with temperature changes rather than cracking. A well-installed paver patio in our climate can last 30–50 years with minimal maintenance. A concrete slab typically begins showing cracks within 5–10 years.

Repairs: Night and Day Difference

When concrete cracks — and it will — your repair options are limited and rarely look great. Patching concrete is visible and the patio never quite looks right again. Some homeowners end up replacing the entire slab.

With pavers, a cracked or settled section is repaired by pulling up the affected pavers, regrading the base, and relaying them. The repair is essentially invisible because the pavers match perfectly. We've pulled up pavers from 20-year-old patios and relaid them without any visual difference.

Appearance and Design Flexibility

Concrete gives you one look: gray slab. You can stamp or color it, but those finishes fade and chip over time. Pavers come in hundreds of colors, shapes, textures, and patterns — herringbone, running bond, circle kits, mixed sizes. They look custom because they are.

They also integrate beautifully with retaining walls, steps, fire pits, and outdoor kitchens using matching materials — something a concrete slab simply can't do.

Long-Term Value

Studies consistently show that quality paver patios add more resale value to a home than concrete. Buyers recognize quality materials, and a beautiful paver patio photographs well and stands out in listings. In a competitive Western NC real estate market, that matters.

So Which Should You Choose?

If budget is extremely tight and you need the most square footage for the least money right now — concrete makes sense. But if you're planning to stay in your home for 10+ years, pavers are the smarter long-term investment. Less maintenance, better durability in our climate, easier repairs, and significantly better curb appeal.

"We've never had a client who chose pavers regret it. We've had plenty who chose concrete first and came back to us 8 years later to replace the cracked slab with pavers."
