When Is the Best Time to Build a Patio or Retaining Wall in NC?

One of the most common questions we hear is some version of: "We want a patio by summer — is that still possible?" The honest answer depends on when you're asking. Here's how the construction calendar actually works in Western NC, and what timing decisions look like for homeowners planning hardscape projects.

The Best Time to Build Is Fall or Winter

Counterintuitive but true. Fall — September through November — is often the best window for hardscape installation in Western NC. The ground isn't frozen, temperatures are cooler for crews, the spring rush hasn't happened yet, and scheduling is far more flexible. You get faster start dates, more contractor attention, and you're ready for spring before the season even begins.

Winter work (December through February) is possible for most hardscape projects. We work through winter except during hard freezes or when ground conditions make excavation impractical. Block work, paver installation, and masonry all proceed normally in mild winter conditions. If you want spring availability, winter is actually the time to build.

Spring Is When Everyone Calls — Which Means You're Competing

March through May is our busiest inquiry period by a significant margin. Everyone who spent the winter thinking "we should really do something with the backyard" calls us in the same eight-week window. By April, most reputable contractors in Western NC are scheduling into June or July at minimum. By May, it's often August or September before we can start a new project.

If you want your patio done in time for a June cookout, you need to be having design conversations in January or February — not May.

Summer Is Fully Booked

June, July, and August are typically fully committed for quality contractors. We're executing the projects that were designed and contracted in the winter and spring. Summer is not the time to be starting the contractor search — it's the time to be enjoying your finished project.

Can You Build in Any Season?

For most hardscape work in Western NC — yes. Our climate doesn't have severe enough winters to shut down construction for months at a time. The specific conditions to avoid:

Outside of these conditions, hardscape installation proceeds year-round.

The Design Timeline

Build in time for design before construction starts. Our 3D design process typically takes 1–3 weeks from initial consultation to final renders, depending on project complexity and how many revision rounds you want. Then there's contract finalization, material ordering (some specialty pavers and block have lead times), and permit processing if required.

A realistic timeline from first call to build start is 4–8 weeks for a straightforward project, longer for complex multi-phase builds. Factor this in when you're planning your target completion date.

The Short Version

"The homeowners who are happiest with their timelines are the ones who started the conversation in the off-season. The ones who are most frustrated are the ones who called us in May expecting June."
